Guidelines on Freelance Fees

The daily rate a freelance dance practitioner is paid should reflect the type/level of work and range of roles being undertaken and the experience/qualification of the individual concerned. It is also important to bear in mind the length of the contract, in that shorter contracts will usually attract a higher daily or hourly rate.

Please be aware that for a freelancer the hourly rate will reflect preparation time, planning and finding resources not just the practical teaching time. You should also be aware of other legal requirements, such as holiday pay, which may become significant during a longer contract.

As a guideline Hampshire Dance suggests that the daily rate for an experienced freelance dance practitioner should be approximately £160 per day or £30 per hour. This is based on the 2007-8 fee scale recommended by the Foundation for Community Dance - please see below

Trainee: someone who undertakes to do practitioner work under the guidance and supervision of an experienced practitioner. The trainee will experience "on the job" training working alongside other practitioners.

Scale 1: a new practitioner working in their own right or alongside more experienced practitioner. They will be responsible for their own programming within a clearly defined brief and they may be responsible for managing a small budget.

Scale 2: an experienced practitioner who has been working in the field some years or who has relevant experience in a related field. They will be responsible for their own planning and may manage a budget.

Scale 3: for experienced practitioners or those having significant relevant experience, who are responsible for such things as: programming, management, planning and policy development, fundraising and managing a substantial budget.
