U.Dance 2014

NorthWest Dance: The Lowry Youth Dance Partnership hosted U.Dance NW - The Lowry’s Regional Young Peoples Dance Festival on Sat 22nd and Sun 23rd March 2014.

The NW event acted as the selection event for the Main Performance Strand of the National Festival U.Dance 2014 delivered by Youth Dance England & Dance4 in Nottingham from 26th to 29th June 2014.

YDE and Dance4 worked with organisations in Nottingham including, Nottingham Playhouse, University of Nottingham, Lakeside Arts Centre and other venues to show the breadth and diversity of youth dance that is being created in the UK.

Approx 300 young people took part in the event from across the country including representation from the National Youth Dance Companies of Wales and Scotland.

Alongside the Main Performance strand of the festival YDE also presented two other opportunities to be involved in the National Event.

  • U.Dance Dimensions - This strand was launched for U.Dance 2013. It was added to allow a more experimental approach to making dance, with the opportunity to make a work that is longer than the usual 7 minutes. YDE look for pieces that expand pre-conceived ideas about youth dance work that push the boundaries and present an exceptionally high quality dance work.

  • U.Dance South Asian - This strand was brand new and unique to U.Dance 2014 in the East Midlands. It was created to increase the number of groups presenting work in a South Asian dance style at the national festival. The East Midlands is home to excellent South Asian dance practice which YDE and Dance4 wish to give a high profile at U.Dance 2014.

The two North West groups selected to represent the region at this prestigious event were:

Chorley and District Boys Dance Company

Swati Youth Dance
