On 21st and 22nd March 2015 NorthWest Dance played host to the region’s largest youth dance festival U.Dance NW.
Over two nights, youth dance companies from all over the North West showcased their very best talents in an exhilarating evening of exciting and varied dance. From Contemporary to Experimental Break dance, Bharata Natyam to Dance Theatre, and a fusion of everything in between, there really was something for everyone.
Companies from across the region sent in their applications to get involved in U.Dance NW 2015. Companies were asked to send a video submission of their piece to audition for the festival. The panel then collectively decided on the final selection of who would perform at the U.Dance NW 2015 Regional Platform.
Successful applicants were chosen by a panel of dance experts from the North West, and Lowry Youth Dance Ambassadors Scheme, selected for their individual skills and experience so applicants were in the best of hands. The panel really were spoilt with the high standard and variety of dance that was submitted this year and the decision as always was a hard one to make.

This year we continued our #UDanceAnywhere challenges and each youth dance company was set the challenge to find the U.Dance 2015 blue logos hidden around The Lowry attached to them a dance photo challenge. Example of these challenges were: ‘Create a balancing photo’, ‘Take a photo of a four person plank’, ‘Take a photo with a dancer who you don’t know’…
The @northwestdance twitter feed for two days was filled with exciting and creative #UDanceAnywhere photos and before the show each evening, two winners were chosen for the best submission and given free tickets to watch 'Opus' performed at The Lowry by CIRCA in May!
The #UDanceAnywhere photos were so incredible we wanted to share them with you! Check out the #udanceanywhere images on our Storify Feed >>>
Over the weekend the dance companies also took part in a varied programme of workshops at The Lowry. This year they worked with:
Bridget Fiske - The Lowry Centre for Advanced Training – Delivery of a Wayne McGregor ‘Mind & Movement Creative’ resource workshop - a tool kit for choreography based on Wayne McGregor's Choreographic Thinking Tools. Giving the U.Dance NW 2015 participants the opportunity to explore their own creativity and develop movement vocabulary through a new process.
Dr Swati Raut and Sheetal Maru - Swati Dance Company – Delivery of a Bharatanatyam workshop. In which the participants were taught the rhythms and techniques that form classical Bharatanatyam, a key form of South Asian dance.
Malachi Simmons - 12 Degrees North & Theo Fapohunda - Northern School of Contemporary Dance/ Company Chameleon - These energetic workshops demonstrated the exciting potential of fusing the styles of capoeira and breaking and explored with the dancers the creative and physical possibilities of these forms of dance when applied to their own knowledge and skills.
Alexandra Lamb - The Lowry Centre for Advanced Training – The workshop demonstrated how the Pilates technique can enrich a dancers training and overall health as well as providing techniques to help dancers prepare mentally and physically for their performance.
Rohan Shah & Anupam Hinge - Shiamak Dance Education – This energetic and fast paced workshop introduced the participants to the rhythms and techniques that form Bollywood dance.
Congratulations and Thank you to everyone who applied and performed at U.Dance NorthWest 2015!
The standard of work was absolutely excellent – the platform displayed the diverse ability and young creativity present within the North West region and the energy and enthusiasm that was demonstrated throughout the weekend was inspirational. We consistently have one of the highest numbers of applications to attend the North West event and this reflects the huge amount of excellent young people's dance that is happening in the North West.
U.Dance 2015 - The National Festival
