Behind the Scenes with Nigel Charnock

Ludus Dance is delighted to offer an unique and exclusive opportunity to get behind the scenes with world renowned choreographer, Nigel Charnock, during the production of our highly-anticipated new show, Consequences.

The Production

Consequences will be premiered at Nuffield Theatre Lancaster in September 2010 before embarking on an 18-month long national tour. It is a triple-bill production featuring the work of three of the UK's most esteemed choreographers - Nigel Charnock, Yael Flexer and Ben Wright. Each has conceived a 20-minute piece based on their interpretation of the theme of 'consequences'.
The devising sessions for Nigel Charnock's piece, Pandemonium, will involve him working with the Ludus Dance Touring Company throughout the last three weeks of May 2010. Devising is the core element of the creative process in which the choreographer works with the dancers to transform his or her ideas into a finished performance piece. More often than not, these sessions take place behind closed doors as they are periods of intense creativity and emotional engagement; something most choreographers would never dream of sharing with outsiders and the public.

The Opportunity

At Nigel's request, we are throwing open the doors and welcoming in anyone who would like to attend as a fly on the wall and gain some invaluable insights into the world of professional dance production. Because this is such a unusual and exciting opportunity we will also be blogging content from the devising sessions on the Ludus website.
Therefore, we are now inviting expressions of interest from dancers, students, choreographers, artists, musicians, creative entrepreneurs, journalists and aspiring rapporteurs to attend the devising and contribute to this process.
To ensure that the documentation is as rich and multi-faceted as possible, we will be asking all our guest observers to record their experience, through whatever medium they choose (e.g. painting, video or photography*); all we ask is for people to provide a true impression of what they see and learn and allow us to share it with the outside world.

The Practicalities

The devising period runs over three weeks from Thursday 13th to Friday 28th May on the following dates:
  • Week 1: Thu 13th and Fri 14th May
  • Week 2: Mon 17th to Fri 21st May
  • Week 3: Mon 24th to Fri 28th May
There are two open sessions on each day; mornings from 9am till 1pm and afternoons from 2pm till 6pm**. There will only be a limited number of places available for each session but guests can request to attend for just one half a day or for the entire period and we’ll do what we can to accommodate, depending on demand and availability.
Please note that Week 1 devising will be held at The Nuffield Theatre at Lancaster University. Weeks 2 and 3 will be held at More Music in Morecambe.

Registration

To ensure you do not miss out on this exciting opportunity, please download, complete and return the simple form here no later than Fri 30th April.
If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact Gil Graystone on 01524 389901 or via gil.graystone@ludusdance.org
* You will need to provide your own materials to do this, but we will have some electronic equipment on hand that can be booked in advance via the form.
** Please also note that, due to the creative nature of devising, times may vary.
